One-Double-Zero

For two reasons, guilt always washed over Amy Zimmerman when she visited her father-in-law at the Twilight Bells Senior Residence. One, he no longer was her father-in-law because his son had died months earlier. And two, she couldn’t tell him the circumstances of his son’s death without sounding crazy. So she pretended Alan had stepped out for a pack of cigarettes one day and never came back instead of him turning to ice then melting before her eyes.

It didn’t help that within a year she’d fallen in love with a local golf pro, and they lived in sin together until she could have Alan legally declared dead.

Your I.D. Card, Please

Clutching her ticket, Ava Young stood in line for the Twilight Community Players production of Nunsense. She chivvied up behind her friend, Janice, in the hope the ushers would see them as one person instead of two.

“I don’t know about this,” she muttered as the line grew shorter.

Janice turned her head. “What are you worried about?”

“If they ask for my I.D. card, I’m screwed.” Ava took a deep breath and shuffled forward.

X-Ray, Please Pray

Xavier Alvarez sat in the dentist chair, sweating proverbial buckets. Or rather, he occupied the chair, because sitting implied relaxation, and he was as far away from relaxing as he was from Jupiter.

He’d been stupid to avoid scheduling an appointment, stupid to think his toothache would go away. Instead, he’d woken yesterday with his jaw so swollen he looked like a basset hound. Panicked, he’d solicited advice from Mickey Meadows, his golf buddy and Twilight, Arizona’s number one volunteer. He’d been lucky enough to get an appointment with Dr. Krassenstein for the following day.

“Now, Xavier,” the hygienist said, not asking permission to use his first name, “It says here you haven’t had a check-up in a year?”

Two years, but to admit the lapse would brand him as someone who didn’t care about oral hygiene, which he did. He just didn’t care about dentists.
