Trains, Planes, and Wishes

“Shh. Shh. Wait a minute. Wait a minute.”

Terri Little strained to hear her neighbor’s warning. Fighter jets flew overhead, drowning out her words and rattling the ice tea glasses on the patio table.

Laura Evans tracked the sound, her blue eyes scanning the cloudless Arizona sky. As the twin jets circled to the north and their rumble rolled off the flat valley surrounding the retirement village of Twilight, she lowered a cautioning hand then nodded.

“They’re practicing for the air show next month.”

“Damn planes.” Terri popped an ice-cold grape into her mouth and crunched down, the juice refreshing in the late April heat. “They never told me it would be so loud here.”

Meals on Wheels

Mickey Meadows stopped his car in the Sutton’s driveway and pocketed the key. At seventy-two, he took longer than he used to get out, but once he had, he opened the back door and removed a container. Holding it in one hand, he pressed the doorbell with the other.

“Meals on Wheels,” he crowed through the steel security door.

A minute later, Dale Sutton opened the door.

“Morning, Mickey,” he said, standing back to let the other man in.

Mickey stepped into a room that never failed to amaze him. Dolls of every size and shape lined the perimeter and flat surface. Shelves took up three sides of the room, all filled with dolls, sitting, standing, leaning, and boxed in display cases.

It gave him the creeps, but he’d never said a word to the owners.

Llama Drama

Laura Evans parked in the first available spot at the Twilight Bells Senior Residence and leaned her head against the steering wheel. She dreaded these visits. Tom’s dementia continued to worsen. He no longer recognized her, but she continued to visit every day.

She swiped at the corner of each eye, took a fortifying breath, and opened the door.

Cool, wet air met her, one of the few times during the year when the Arizona heat didn’t knock her off her feet. They’d moved to the retirement village five years earlier for Tom’s health. His asthma cleared, but his mind slowly degraded.

A cluster of people blocked the side entrance. Fear zapped through her. Had someone escaped? Was it Tom? She raced toward one of the nurses.

“What is it? Is Tom okay?”

“Mrs. Evans, it’s good to see you. Your husband is in the courtyard with the other residents. Did you forget we have a petting zoo today?”

Laura’s heart shuddered to a normal rhythm. “Yes, I’m afraid I did.” How could she forget? She’d talked about it with Tom for weeks.

“He’s with the llamas, they seem to like him.”

Laura hustled through the residents and their families, searching for her husband, but she didn’t see him.
